Mic
Recently I spent a short time in the States, and while there, I was
especially ministered to by children.
For example, one of the families that helps support me had me over
for a dinner. For 2 hours after supper, Barb and Dave's 4 kids ranging
in ages from 5 to 12, as well as some other neighborhood kids...drilled
me with questions about the people in Mozambique and the situation
there. Afterwards, Barb told me the following:
"Melinda, we had been reading together as a family your e-mails from
Mozambique. After that, if Dave or I forgot to mention you in our
prayers, our children would remind us- always. Once, five-year old
Mic started asking me, 'But where are their parents mom? Why do they
have to sleep on garbage- and eat it too?' I told Mic more about the
war and the poverty, and as I did so he would interrupt me with his
questions:
'So they have no parents??'
'Yes, Mic, that's right.'
I continued on with my explaining, delicately trying to help him understand
how some might have had parents, but had been abandoned by them. It
struck me as ironic that I was so carefully trying to choose my words
in an attempt to shield my precious five-year old from some of the
harsh realities of the world, yet some five-year old in Mozambique
was actually having to live this harsh reality.
Mic had some more questions. He was thinking deeply about all this.
'Don't they have anyone to tuck them in at night?'
'No Mic, they don't.'
Again, I tried to continue my explanation of the situation, when once
again, Mic interrupted:
'There's NO one to feed them? Love them?'
'Unfortunately Mic, that's true.'
'Well mom,' he suggested, 'call Melinda and tell her to bring some
of those kids home with her. They can sleep in my bed.'
Barb told me that as the week passed, Mic continued to hound her about
calling me. Finally, my friend said to her son:
'Look Mic, bringing someone into our home to live with us is a very
big thing. I think we should first ask God if He wants us to do this.'
Immediately Mic looked up at her, shock and amazement emanating from
his eyes.
'Does not compute' was written all over his face.
'You mean God wouldn't want us to take in a child who is sleeping
on garbage? Who has no parents? Who no one else has taken in?'
Barb relates that she was left speechless in response to the wisdom
of her five year old (out of the mouths of babes...). All her adult
rationales for not responding were shattered by his vision of the
truth.
May we all be so shattered by His invitation to be involved in ministering
to a broken hurting world.
